About Rachel Savané

I create my jewelry designs drawing inspiration from each carefully chosen fine gemstone, while combining curvilinear silver to create a distinct melodic energy in each piece as I infuse design in every element of the jewelry creating a new functionality.

The stones are chosen one-by-one at gem shows where I pour over piles of gems to find the individual pieces that spark a tingle of excitement in me. And I know that that tingle of excitement will translate into a piece of jewelry with extraordinary dynamics.

I draw with silver. By this I mean that I begin to create a design once I’ve prepared my pieces of silver which will become jewelry. I prepare "sticks and balls" of silver in random lengths and thicknesses. With these on hand I contemplate a particular stick or two alongside the stone. Shorter sticks = a swoosh effect. Longer sticks will loop and wind around and back. Balls have a staccato effect. I feel the freedom of unlimited possibilities with these basic elements. The curves have character. And the character of the curves evolves. The interplay between sticks (of silver) and stones varies depending on the point at which they are joined and then again by a staccato ball placed as a balancing point.

Balance and asymmetry! I live for them. I strive to achieve balance in my life and my work. Asymmetry seems natural to me. When I observe the beauty of nature whether in the shape of a tree or the flow of a flock of birds in flight I see amazing shapes. In my work I feel a deep satisfaction from the flow of the metal and its reflection back to the pattern or shape of the stone it surrounds. The integration of asymmetry in my work means that jewelry wearing has achieved a new level wherein the wearer has the ability and power to decide. The choice of direction chosen in wearing my earrings, rings and bracelets dictates the effect of the piece on the wearer as well as the observer.
