Storm’s a-Comin’
Kentucky agate set in sterling silver. One of a kind. Designed and handcrafted by Rachel Savané at Savané Silver, her working studio and gallery in downtown Lexington, Kentucky.
The gently elongated marquise shape of this Kentucky agate holds a landscape all its own. Warm layers of butterscotch, ochre, soft mauve, and cream ripple across the stone in intricate contours, while a dramatic field of deep charcoal gray gathers at one end—like a darkening sky moving toward the land below. That approaching weather inspired the name Storm’s a-Comin’.
Because the agate has a relatively low profile and an elegant, elongated shape, I wanted the silverwork to remain light and open. I created the band from doubled sterling silver wire, allowing it to travel beneath the stone and emerge in loose, fluid loops along the edges. The airy construction gives the ring movement and dimension without competing with the remarkable natural patterning of the agate.
There is a wonderful tension in this piece between delicacy and drama: the lightness of the silver, the warmth and intricacy of the landscape, and that unmistakable dark sky gathering on the horizon.
